Who I am
I'm 34, I live in Manchester, and I've spent the better part of a decade on one dating app or another. Not because I'm looking for a wedding, but because casual dating suits the life I actually have — long hours, a lot of travel for work, and no interest in pretending otherwise. I've been open about that from the start, and it's made everything simpler.
On Your-Local-Hookup I write about what I've genuinely run into: profiles that get ignored and profiles that get replies, apps that are worth the subscription and apps that are a ghost town, and the conversations most people avoid having — about expectations, about discretion, about what happens when one person wants more than the other.
How it started
After a long relationship ended in 2016 I did what everyone does and downloaded three apps in one evening. The first six months were a mess. I wrote a profile that sounded like a CV, took every unanswered message personally and met people I had nothing in common with because I hadn't thought about what I actually wanted.
What changed things was being blunt. I rewrote my profile to say plainly that I was looking for something casual, and the volume of matches dropped — but the quality went up enormously. Fewer conversations, far fewer wasted evenings, and nobody feeling misled. That's the lesson I keep coming back to, and it's the reason this blog exists.
